Best Cruise Ships and Ideas For Families With Teens

Have a teenager? Here are cruise options they’re sure to enjoy!

Teenagers can be picky customers, but a variety of cruise ships have learned how to please teen guests in an effort to keep the entire family happy while on vacation. Many large cruise ships allow teenagers their own space under the supervision of experienced counselors where they can feel adult-like in their own lounges, dance halls, and excursion trips.

Perfect for when parents want a little alone time on a vacation, or for when everyone wants to explore their own interests for a portion of the trip, it’s great to know that cruise ships can create a vacation that’s well-suited for guests of all ages.  When traveling with teenagers, check out these cruise ships first.

Allure of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas: There’s no shortage of activities for teens on these cruise ships, with varied activities separate for kids 12-14, and 15-17. Teens can enjoy taking DJ lessons, practice surfing with FlowRider, the simulated surfing machine, and grab lunch with new friends at the on board Johnny Rockets. Since teens need downtime as well, there are special spa menus for guests 13-17 including fun manicures and facials. Expanding their teen appeal, coming in November 2014, Quantum of the Seas will debut a few more additional fun activities for teens including a simulated sky diving capsule and bumper cars!

Royal Princess, Regal Princess: During the day teens can relax at the teen-only outdoor lounge which comes complete with an outdoor zen space and wading pool, perfect for the sunny afternoons at sea. For those who want to try something a bit more active, the on-property batting cage and laser tag shooting range make for great fun; while if relaxing is more your teen’s thing, there are a variety of create activities ranging from specialty spa treatments to yoga classes and using the wifi in the teen only section. The Remix Club is great for teens 12-17 where facilities include comfy seating, a dance floor, a DJ booth and fun games such as indoor skee-ball. At night, teens can enjoy watching one of the many Outdoor Movies Under The Stars hosted nightly with weather permitting, or head back to the Remix Club where there are special events ranging from a teen casino night to hip-hop dance lessons that will be sure to keep your teen happy.

Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy: Disney creates their cruise lines with families in mind, therefore it’s no surprise that there are endless activities for teens on Disney’s Dream and Fantasy ships. The Edge is a special hangout space for tweens ages 11-14, which has a full floor-to-ceiling wall dedicated to video screens along with a video game section and an illuminated dance floor that’s perfect for music lovers. For the social media experts in your family, tweens and teens can use on board internet-based social media and computer apps to post photos and leave messages.

If your teens want to branch out from computers, a variety of activities are featured at The Edge daily to keep guests entertained. Two must-do activities include That’s Hilarious, an inside look at improv group where guests can learn the basics of improv, movie scene interactions and comedy games while Ghost Voyagers offers a slightly scary journey, where teens are given ghost-hunting gear before exploring strange occurrences that have happened on the ship in the past. Teens ages 14-17 also have their own hip hop lounge, Vibe, complete with a coffee bar/nightclub full of TV’s and a dance floor with a DJ booth. If families want to explore a few day destinations on their own, Disney Wonder hosts a few teen-only adventure excursions for family members to each make the most of their vacation.

Whether looking for a family vacation for yourselves, a small group travel opportunity with other families, or a group trip that can double as reunion get-together trip, cruises are often best considered when you take your teen’s needs in mind. Not only will your teenager be happy hanging out with the teens cruise group but the whole family can enjoy the trip as a whole both together and with the alone time.
